HISTORIA. QUIEN ERA ROBERTO GARCIA PEÑA?

Periodista santandereano (Bucaramanga, abril 24 de 1910 - Bogotá, noviembre 28 de 1993).

Nacido en el hogar de Carolina Peña y Tirso García Guzmán, Roberto García-Peña adelantó sus estudios escolares en el Colegio San Pedro Claver de Bucaramanga y los superiores en la Universidad Externado de Colombia. Complementó sus estudios con especialización en Ciencias Internacionales, Derecho Internacional Público y Privado e Historia Diplomática en la Universidad de Chile. Brillante periodista, fue designado director emérito del diario El Tiempo después de haberlo dirigido durante 42 años y haber escrito más de veinte mil notas editoriales. Fue secretario privado del Ministerio de Gobierno, secretario general del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y diplomático en Perú y Chile. Roberto García-Peña es un grande escritor, un trabajador infatigable y un hombre bueno, dijo Eduardo Santos. En realidad, sin vanidad alguna puedo decir que yo nací periodista y desde mi infancia tuve inquietudes periodísticas, decía el propio García-Peña, quien firmaba su columna "El rastro de los hechos" con el seudónimo Ayax. García-Peña formó parte de la llamada Generación del 30 que integraba la redacción de El Tiempo, de la cual hacían parte, entre otros, Alberto Lleras Camargo, Enrique Santos Montejo "Calibán", Luis Eduardo Nieto Caballero, Oliverio Perry, Hernando Téllez, Gabriel Montaña, Federico Rivas Aldana "Fraylejón" y Gilberto Owen.Como pocos tenía el valor de sus convicciones, dijo de él Abdón Espinosa Valderrama, quien lo acompañó en otras épocas junto con José Pratt, Jaime Posada o Eduardo Camargo.

Después de haber superado el incendio de 1951, el 4 de agosto de 1955, en tiempos de la dictadura militar, el periódico fue clausurado. Así lo vivió García-Peña: Yo fui llamado por el Estado Mayor a que rectificara una versión sobre el asesinato de los Correa, cerca de Pereira, que había sido publicado en El Comercio, del Ecuador, estando de visita en Quito el dictador Rojas Pinilla. En vista de que yo me negara a hacer la rectificación que me exigía el comando del Estado Mayor, se me notificó que si no aceptaba lo que se me proponía por la fuerza, se verían obligados a cerrar El Tiempo indefinidamente. Yo manifesté entonces que de ninguna manera aceptaba la rectificación que me pedían y así fue como el 4 de agosto fue clausurado El Tiempo.

Entre otras, sus páginas fueron recogidas en una publicación de 1970 del Instituto Colombiano de Cultura Hispánica titulada como su columna, y en el libro Medio siglo sobre El Tiempo, que en 1978 recogió sus artículos y notas editoriales publicadas a partir de 1938. Una de sus más célebres frases recoge su testimonio en el Club de Prensa en Washington: El pueblo es responsable y atiende a su responsabilidad cuando está informado, cuando puede crearse una conciencia de los problemas, cuando sabe que su opinión decide. Es decir, cuando gobierna. El día de su muerte, la columna editorial de El Tiempo recordó su temple, su liberalismo y su temperamento: En su firmeza, lo rodeaba un ambiente comprensivo y humano [...] era un poeta nato, idealista, de generosidad a veces excesiva y pródiga. No lo atraía la riqueza material que estuvo al alcance de sus manos. Tampoco la ambición política o el ansia de poder [...] a todos aquellos que llevan su sangre [descendientes de su hogar felizmente formado con Rosita Archila] un abrazo estrechísimo de solidaridad, afecto y admiración por quien cumplió todas las reglas que debe tener un hombre de bien y un periodista excepcional.
